Elizabeth Crockett Burial Site – Acton, Texas

October 25, 2011 Leave a comment

The smallest state park in the state of Texas.

Elizabeth Crockett was the second wife of Davy Crockett.  Elizabeth married Davy Crockett in Tennessee in 1815.

Davy Crockett became a Texas hero when he brought a group of volunteers from Tennessee to help defend the Alamo against the Mexican Army under the command of Santa Anna.  Davy Crockett died during the final battle of the Alamo.  Once Texas defeated Santa Anna the legislature of the time authorized land grants to heirs of the soldiers who defended the Alamo.  In 1853 Elizabeth finally moved to Texas near the current day town of Acton, TX to claim her land.  Much of the choice land was taken by this time so Elizabeth had to pay a surveyor half of her land to locate a suitable tract of land.

Elizabeth lived here until she passed away on January 31, 1860.  She was laid to rest at this spot.  In 1911 the Texas legislature authorized funds to erect a monument in honor of Elizabeth at the Acton Cemetery.   In 1949 the site was transferred to the State Parks Board, and today this 12 foot by 21 foot plot of land is Texas’s smallest state park.  This proves that not all things are bigger in Texas.
